ICAO marks 25 years since 9/11, highlights evolving aviation security threats
On the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, ICAO recalled the security reforms that followed and warned of new dangers including cyberattacks and drone misuse.
The International Civil Aviation Organization marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks with a reminder of how aviation security has changed and what threats remain. Countries worldwide tightened their laws, standards and screening after the attacks. Those efforts led to the 2010 Beijing Convention and Beijing Protocol, which address newer forms of attacks on civil aviation. Fewer than one-third of ICAO member states have ratified those agreements. ICAO identified several current risks: cyberattacks, insider threats, drone misuse, navigation interference, and security hazards linked to conflict zones.
