Italy Orders Two More MQ-9A Block 5 Drones from GA-ASI
The Italian Air Force has ordered two additional MQ-9A Block 5 remotely piloted aircraft from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, with delivery by end of 2027.
Italy has ordered two more MQ-9A Block 5 remotely piloted aircraft from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI). Delivery is set for the end of 2027, along with an unspecified number of ground control stations.
The order falls under a Foreign Military Sale authorized in 2024 covering up to six MQ-9s. Italy began Block 5 flight operations in 2023 and has upgraded its existing aircraft to the same configuration. According to Aviation Week, the two aircraft are "white tails," already built but previously unsold.
GA-ASI President David R. Alexander noted Italy's long partnership and the Italian Air Force's use of the MQ-9A for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions over Italy, the Mediterranean, and in support of NATO operations. Parliamentary documents from December 2025 mention approval to acquire six aircraft in Block 5 configuration.
