NATS Outage Leads to Nearly 550 British Airways Cancellations
British Airways expects to resume a normal schedule after cancellations affecting over 85,000 passengers due to a UK air traffic control failure.
British Airways said on Thursday that it expected to operate a normal schedule, after cancelling almost 550 flights earlier in the week because of an air traffic control outage at NATS. More than 85,000 people were affected.
The airline reported that since Tuesday it had rebooked over 60,000 customers onto alternative flights. On Wednesday it operated nearly 80% of its planned network schedule. Aircraft and crew were left out of position, which led to more than 190 further cancellations from Wednesday's original timetable.
Passengers due to travel on Thursday who no longer wished to fly were offered free flight changes until Sunday 13 September. The airline also noted that the incident showed how disruption in one part of the aviation system can affect airlines and passengers.
