Power bank fire on KLM Curaçao flight prompts return to Amsterdam
A power bank caught fire aboard a KLM flight from Amsterdam to Curaçao, forcing the aircraft to turn back, according to passengers who said the device belonged to former KLM chief Camiel Eurlings.
A power bank caught fire on a KLM flight from Amsterdam to Curaçao, and the aircraft turned back to Amsterdam. Several passengers gave an account to RTL Nieuws.
The passengers said the device belonged to Camiel Eurlings, a former chief executive of KLM, and that he had been charging it during the flight. KLM does not permit that.
The power bank exploded and caught fire. Eurlings was reportedly lightly injured.
Cabin crew put out the fire. The aircraft, a Boeing 787-10, was already over the Atlantic when it happened. It landed at Schiphol on Thursday evening after five and a half hours in the air in total.
KLM allows power banks on board but prohibits their use and charging during flights.
The flight took place on Thursday, 17 September.
