Private Pilot Certificate Cost Estimated at $18,257

A new analysis estimates the cost of earning a private pilot certificate in the United States at $18,257. The figure comes from PilotBound's Flight Training Cost Report, released September 3. It is based on published rates from 500 flight schools.

The report found a median aircraft rental rate of $165 per hour and a median instructor rate of $69 per hour. It assumes training takes 72 hours, which the company says is typical. The total includes costs for the knowledge test, practical test, medical certificate, and training equipment. PilotBound gives a typical range of roughly $15,700 to $20,800, depending on local rates.

Aircraft rental rates in the sample varied widely. The lowest was $52 per hour and the highest $430. The middle half of schools charged between $145 and $183. Fuel policies differed: 295 schools said their rates included fuel, 27 published dry rates, and 178 did not specify. The company excluded schools that do not publish sufficient pricing information, so the sample should not be taken as a national average.

The estimate follows Redbird Flight's 2026 State of Flight Training Survey, which placed median private pilot training costs above $16,000. Redbird's figure was based on survey responses from flight schools, instructors, pilots, and designated pilot examiners, while PilotBound used publicly posted prices. The two numbers are not directly comparable.
