Rolls-Royce Deutschland to lead EU hybrid-electric engine research project
Rolls-Royce Deutschland will head the European research project Elevated, which aims to demonstrate a hybrid-electric turbofan for future short- and medium-haul aircraft.
Rolls-Royce Deutschland is leading a European research project called Elevated, which aims to demonstrate a hybrid-electric gas turbine propulsion system for future short- and medium-haul aircraft.
The plan calls for an electrical subsystem to be integrated into an existing engine and tested under realistic conditions. The technology will also be examined on the UltraFan 30 demonstrator.
The work is meant to help cut CO2 emissions at aircraft level by at least 20 percent. Ground tests of the UltraFan 30, developed for narrowbody aircraft, are scheduled for 2028.
Elevated is one of 19 new projects in the EU's Clean Aviation programme. Together they are to receive up to 290 million euros in EU funding.
