Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 upgrade cuts shop visits
Rolls-Royce claims its Trent 1000 XE engine can stay on wing three times longer than the previous Trent 1000 TEN, potentially reaching six years between maintenance visits for some operators.
Rolls-Royce says a redesigned engine blade is central to keeping its Trent 1000 powerplant in service longer before it must be removed for maintenance. The Trent 1000 XE standard offers three times the time on wing of the Trent 1000 TEN it replaces, according to the manufacturer. Chief Executive Tufan Erginbilgiç has put the real-world figure at up to six years between shop visits for some customers.
Durability problems with the original Trent 1000 cost Rolls-Royce more than $3 billion. They also helped General Electric take roughly two-thirds of the engine market for the Boeing 787, and left the programme with a reliability problem that lasted years.
The improvement reaches beyond maintenance scheduling to the engine's competitive position on the 787.
