St.Gallen-Altenrhein Airport Marks Triple Anniversary in 2026
The Swiss airport celebrates 100 years, 35 years of Vienna service, and 15 years of People's Airline, as owner Markus Kopf discusses its role as a real estate investment.
St.Gallen-Altenrhein Airport is marking three anniversaries in 2026: its centenary, 35 years of the direct Vienna connection, and 15 years of operations by its home carrier People's. The airport traces its origins to aircraft designer Claude Dornier, who moved production of the Dornier Do X flying boat to Altenrhein 100 years ago. Since 2010 the airport has been owned by Vorarlberg entrepreneur Markus Kopf and his People's Group.
In an interview, Kopf and managing director Thomas Krutzler discussed current developments at the group. Kopf described owning the airport as personally appealing beyond the business side. He confirmed the airport was originally purchased as a real estate investment and said it remains a real estate business that pays off together with airport and airline operations, though he declined to provide figures. The Vienna route has been operated by People's for 15 years and serves as the airport's flagship service. The interview also covered the group's plans in the anniversary year.
