Telecom outage at Philadelphia TRACON grounds Northeast flights

Flights across the northeastern United States were held on the ground Monday after communications equipment at the FAA's Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control facility failed. An FAA spokesperson said the agency halted arrivals at Philadelphia International, Newark Liberty International and Teterboro because of problems with several frequencies at the site.

The trouble began when the facility's primary circuit went down during the morning. The FAA then found that a backup fiber-optic cable running between New Brunswick and Newark, New Jersey, had been cut by construction work unrelated to the agency.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said a new circuit was being installed while crews worked to restore the damaged line. The fiber break was extensive, he told reporters, and would probably take about 13 hours to fix.

Restrictions on arriving traffic later widened to other airports in the New York area, reaching John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia. Boston temporarily stopped taking flights because of the extra traffic from diversions. Some operations began returning to normal by early afternoon, though delays remained substantial across the region.

Incoming traffic would not be fully restarted at the affected airports, according to the FAA, until officials had satisfied themselves that the airspace was safe.

The same Philadelphia facility figured in a separate set of communications failures that disrupted Newark in 2025. The FAA subsequently replaced the telecommunications link between New York and Philadelphia TRACON, saying in July 2025 that it had moved to fiber-optic connections over two separate paths and added a temporary satellite backup. Congress also allocated $12.5 billion for wider modernization of the air traffic control system.
