UK CAA revises airspace change process ahead of October 2026

The UK Civil Aviation Authority has revised its Airspace Change Process to reflect the Government's Air Navigation Directions and Air Navigation Guidance. The update takes effect on 1 October 2026, alongside the recently revised CAP1616 publication, which covers how airspace changes are proposed, assessed and approved.

According to the regulator, the framework is meant to support a more efficient and adaptable airspace system. It expects an immediate effect on proposed changes in the London area.

The revisions aim to cut flight delays caused by capacity constraints, improve how efficiently airspace is used, and ensure the effects on local communities are properly weighed. Consultation remains a central part of the process.

The CAA says the update will allow a more agile and responsive airspace system and introduce a streamlined route for short-term activities, which it describes as enabling innovation. The reforms also bring the airspace change process closer to wider planning frameworks. The authority says this will give industry greater clarity and allow proposals to be handled more efficiently alongside planning decisions.

Communities affected by airspace change will still have opportunities to give feedback through consultation.
