UK urged to step up hydrogen efforts or risk falling behind
A report from lobby group Hydrogen in Aviation warns the UK government must redouble support for hydrogen-powered aviation to avoid being overtaken by more ambitious rivals.
The UK government must intensify its efforts to support hydrogen in aviation or risk losing the economic benefits of the fuel to more ambitious competitors, according to lobby group Hydrogen in Aviation (HIA).
Publishing a progress review on 2 September, HIA found that only three of 23 targets set in 2024 had been fully or substantially met. Thirteen goals showed some progress, while seven milestones saw no demonstrable progress.
HIA chair Andy Reynolds said the review was intended to be honest about the state of advancement. “We have made a lot of progress but we haven’t done everything we want to do,” he said. The group, which includes Airbus, Bristol Airport, EasyJet, Intelligent Energy, GKN Aerospace and Rolls-Royce, had called for coordinated structural change across government.
