The National Transportation Safety Board has directed the Federal Aviation Administration to require manufacturers to modify restraint systems to prevent occupants from using inactive airbags intended for other seats.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued safety recommendation A-11-001, identified as DCA11SS001, addressed directly to the Federal Aviation Administration. This directive targets Cessna Aircraft Company and other manufacturers whose restraint system designs currently allow an occupant to utilize an inactive airbag restraint system that was not intended for their specific seat location. The NTSB is requiring these entities to modify their restraint system designs to eliminate the possibility of such misuse entirely. Furthermore, the recommendation mandates that modifications be applied to restraint systems in existing airplanes to ensure that the potential for this type of error is removed from current operations.
