The National Transportation Safety Board has directed the Federal Aviation Administration to implement technical modifications to Airport Surface Detection Equipment–Model X where feasible.

In safety recommendation OPS10IA001, designated as A-11-013, the National Transportation Safety Board addressed the Federal Aviation Administration regarding improvements to airport surface detection systems. The board stated that at installation sites where a technical review recommended in Safety Recommendation A-11-12 determines it is feasible, the FAA should implement modifications to Airport Surface Detection Equipment–Model X. These modifications are intended to detect improper operations, such as aircraft landing on taxiways, and to provide alerts to air traffic controllers indicating that potential collision risks exist.
