Safety recommendation

The National Transportation Safety Board has directed the Federal Aviation Administration to amend operational orders to ensure annual verification of airport lighting settings at controlled towers.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued Recommendation OPS10IA001, designated as A-11-014, addressed directly to the Federal Aviation Administration. This directive urges the FAA to amend Federal Aviation Administration Order 7210.3, titled Facility Operation and Administration. The proposed amendment would establish a specific protocol for airports that have air traffic control towers equipped with airport lighting control panels lacking direct indication of airport lighting intensities. Under this new guidance, the air traffic manager would be required to conduct an annual review in coordination with the airport operator. This joint effort aims to compare the preset selection settings configured within the tower lighting control system against established standards. The primary objective is to verify that these configurations fully comply with all relevant FAA requirements, thereby enhancing safety through rigorous procedural oversight.
