The National Transportation Safety Board has directed the Federal Aviation Administration to alert airplane operators about potential underestimations in landing distance data for wet, ungrooved runways.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued safety recommendation DCA08MA085, designated as A-11-029, addressed directly to the Federal Aviation Administration. This directive urges the FAA to inform operators of airplanes that utilize wet runway landing distance data based on the British Civil Air Regulations Reference Wet Hard Surface or Advisory Material Joint 25X1591. The NSB notes that the data contained in Aircraft Flight Manuals and performance supplemental materials may underestimate the actual landing distance required to land safely on wet, ungrooved runways. Consequently, the recommendation calls for the FAA to work with industry stakeholders to provide clear guidance to these operators on how to conduct accurate landing distance assessments when operating on such runway conditions.
