NTSB Issues Recommendation A-12-018 to FAA Regarding Real-Time Lightning Data

The National Transportation Safety Board has directed the Federal Aviation Administration to evaluate and implement real-time total lightning data on air traffic control displays.

Safety recommendation

The National Transportation Safety Board has directed the Federal Aviation Administration to evaluate and implement real-time total lightning data on air traffic control displays.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued safety recommendation A-12-018, designated under reference number CEN10LA363, addressed directly to the Federal Aviation Administration. This directive urges the agency to study the technical feasibility of presenting real-time total lightning data on controller displays at both air route traffic control centers and terminal radar approach control facilities. The recommendation specifies that this data should be integrated using the weather and radar processor system or other available means. If such integration is deemed technically feasible, the NTSB advises the FAA to incorporate real-time total lightning data into controller displays and associated weather products for current and future display systems. This measure aims to enhance situational awareness for air traffic controllers regarding electrical storm activity.
