The National Transportation Safety Board has directed the Federal Aviation Administration to mandate redesigned accessory gearbox heat shields for General Electric engines to mitigate fire risks.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued safety recommendation ENG10RA014, designated as A-13-022, addressed directly to the Federal Aviation Administration. This directive requires the FAA to ensure that General Electric redesigns the accessory gearbox heat shield for its CF6-80C2 model engines. The primary objective of this redesign is to provide enhanced fire protection against bearing compartment fires and failures. Additionally, the new shielding must guard against gas escaping from the low-pressure turbine and high-pressure turbine recoup lines, as well as any other potential fire sources that could impact the accessory compartment. The NTSB has further mandated that the incorporation of these redesigned heat shields be carried out in a timely manner to ensure operational safety.
