The National Transportation Safety Board has issued safety recommendation NTSB CEN13FA096, designated as A-14-003, directed to the Federal Aviation Administration. This recommendation calls for a revision of Advisory Circular 150-5220-16D, which governs Automated Weather Observing Systems for non-federal applications. The specific directive requires that future AWOS installations equipped with present-weather sensors within the National Airspace System report only snow or unknown precipitation when precipitation is detected and the reported air temperature is 32 degrees Fahrenheit or less.
