NTSB Issues Recommendation A-14-005 to FAA Regarding MD-11 Weight-on-Wheels Cueing

The National Transportation Safety Board directs the Federal Aviation Administration to collaborate with Boeing on assessing methods to enhance pilot awareness of bounced landings.

Safety recommendation

The National Transportation Safety Board directs the Federal Aviation Administration to collaborate with Boeing on assessing methods to enhance pilot awareness of bounced landings.

In safety recommendation DCA10RA079, designated as A-14-005, the National Transportation Safety Board has directed the Federal Aviation Administration to work directly with Boeing. The primary objective is to assess specific methods for providing weight-on-wheels cueing to pilots operating MD-11 aircraft. This assessment aims to enhance pilot awareness regarding bounced landings and facilitate proper pilot reaction along with effective control inputs when such events occur. Following this assessment, the FAA is required to provide a formal report detailing the findings. If the assessment indicates that these weight-on-wheels cueing methods could be useful to MD-11 pilots, the FAA must distribute copies of the report to all United States operators of MD-11 airplanes and encourage them to implement means for such cueing in their fleets.
