Safety recommendation
The National Transportation Safety Board has directed Boeing to assess the effectiveness of flare cueing systems for MD-11 pilots in collaboration with the FAA.
The National Transportation Safety Board, identified by reference number DCA10RA079, has issued Recommendation A-14-008 addressed directly to The Boeing Company. This directive requires Boeing to work in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration to assess the effectiveness of flare cueing systems. These systems are intended to assist MD-11 pilots in making timely and appropriate inputs during the landing flare phase of flight. Following this assessment, Boeing must provide a formal report detailing the findings. If the assessment indicates that flare cueing systems could be useful to MD-11 pilots, the recommendation further instructs Boeing to provide copies of the report to all US operators of MD-11 airplanes and encourage them to install such a system on these aircraft.
