Safety recommendation
The National Transportation Safety Board has directed Boeing to assess methods for providing weight-on-wheels cueing to MD-11 pilots to enhance awareness of bounced landings.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued safety recommendation A-14-009, designated as DCA10RA079, addressed directly to The Boeing Company. This directive requires Boeing to collaborate with the Federal Aviation Administration to assess methods for providing weight-on-wheels cueing to MD-11 pilots. The primary objective of this assessment is to enhance pilot awareness of bounced landings and facilitate proper pilot reaction and effective control inputs when such events occur. Boeing is required to provide a formal report detailing the findings of this assessment. Furthermore, if the assessment indicates that these weight-on-wheels cueing methods could be useful to MD-11 pilots, Boeing must provide copies of the report to all US operators of MD-11 airplanes and encourage them to implement means for weight-on-wheels cueing on these aircraft.
