The National Transportation Safety Board has directed the Federal Aviation Administration to mandate consistency in training documents and operational guidance for terrain warning alerts.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued safety recommendation A-14-075, identified by reference number DCA13MA133, addressed directly to the Federal Aviation Administration. This directive urges the agency to require principal operations inspectors to verify that consistency exists among their operators’ training documents, the operators’ Federal Aviation Administration-approved and -accepted documents such as aircraft operating manuals, and manufacturers’ guidance concerning terrain awareness and warning system caution and warning alert responses. Furthermore, the recommendation specifies that these responses must be utilized during night and/or instrument meteorological conditions in a manner that maximizes safety for flight operations.
