The National Transportation Safety Board, identified by reference number DCA14SS009, has issued safety recommendation A-15-002 to the Federal Aviation Administration. This directive requires that all aircraft utilized in extended overwater operations under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 121 or Part 135 be equipped with an airframe low frequency underwater locating device. The mandate applies specifically to aircraft already required to carry both a cockpit voice recorder and a flight data recorder. The specified device must function for at least ninety days and be detectable by equipment commonly available on military, search and rescue, and salvage assets used for wreckage recovery.
