NTSB Recommends Mandatory G-IV Gust Lock Retrofit to Prevent Takeoff Errors

The National Transportation Safety Board urges the FAA to require Gulfstream to retrofit existing G-IV aircraft with a modified gust lock system that physically limits throttle operation.

The National Transportation Safety Board urges the FAA to require Gulfstream to retrofit existing G-IV aircraft with a modified gust lock system that physically limits throttle operation.

The National Transportation Safety Board has issued a safety recommendation, designated ERA14MA271 and labeled A-15-031, directed at the Federal Aviation Administration. This directive calls for immediate action regarding the Gulfstream G-IV aircraft fleet. Specifically, the NTSB requires that after Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation develops a modification for the G-IV gust lock and throttle lever interlock system, the agency must mandate that all existing G-IV airplanes be retrofitted to comply with certification requirements. The goal of this retrofit is to ensure the gust lock system physically limits the operation of the airplane. This physical limitation is designed to provide the pilot with an unmistakable warning at the start of takeoff, thereby preventing potential safety hazards associated with improper gust lock engagement during critical flight phases.
