The National Transportation Safety Board has directed the Federal Aviation Administration to annually revise pilot training protocols to address critical in-flight emergencies.

Safety recommendation

The National Transportation Safety Board has directed the Federal Aviation Administration to annually revise pilot training protocols to address critical in-flight emergencies.

In safety recommendation A-16-019, identified under reference ERA15FA099, the National Transportation Safety Board has instructed the Federal Aviation Administration to collaborate with its internal accident and incident investigation offices, as well as organizations familiar with pilot emergency challenges. The directive requires the FAA to annually revise required training at the national level to ensure it remains current and relevant. This updated training must incorporate lessons learned from recent events across the National Airspace System, focusing on best practices for pilots facing emergencies such as partial or total power loss, fuel emergencies, control difficulties, impaired navigational capability, loss of flight instruments including attitude information, hazardous meteorological conditions, inadvertent flight into instrument meteorological conditions by visual flight rules pilots, and pilot medical issues like hypoxia.
