Safety recommendation A-16-050 urges the Federal Aviation Administration to modify systems so that automated weather observing data is directly available to air traffic controllers.

The National Transportation Safety Board has issued safety recommendation A-16-050, identified as NTSB number CEN15FA044, directed to the Federal Aviation Administration. The board advises the agency to modify its equipment, systems, and procedures to ensure that data from all commissioned, nonfederal automated weather observing system III and IV facilities across the nation are directly and timely accessible. This access is intended for the weather message switching center replacement system and for air traffic controllers at their work stations, thereby enabling them to provide real-time assistance to pilots requesting weather information along their route of flight.
