NTSB Issues Recommendation A-17-014 to Aviation Associations Regarding Pilot Weather Reports

The National Transportation Safety Board, identified by reference number DCA15SR001, has issued Safety Recommendation A-17-014 addressed to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and the Air Safety Institute. This directive requires these organizations to update their online pilot weather report course content. The updated material must include scenario-based training utilizing real-world examples. These examples are intended to illustrate the value of both fair-weather and adverse-weather pilot weather reports. Additionally, the training must explain how meteorologists use these reports to verify and revise aviation weather forecasts and advisory products to improve safety in the National Airspace System. The guidance must also provide instructions on how to assess and describe weather phenomena and report their location accurately. Finally, the course must demonstrate the various ways to submit pilot weather reports.
