Safety recommendation

The National Transportation Safety Board has directed the Aviation Accreditation Board International, the National Association of Flight Instructors, and the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators to encourage members to teach the importance of pilot weather reports.

In safety recommendation DCA15SR001 (A-17-015), the NTSB urges the Aviation Accreditation Board International, the National Association of Flight Instructors, and the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators to encourage their members to teach students about pilot weather reports during initial flight training, recurrent flight training, and flight reviews. The recommendation specifies that instruction must include real-world examples illustrating the value of both fair-weather and adverse-weather PIREPs, explanations of how these reports benefit users in the National Airspace System, and examples of ways to submit PIREPs while minimizing distraction. Additionally, trainees should gain practical experience assessing weather and submitting accurate location reports.
