The National Transportation Safety Board urges the Federal Aviation Administration to encourage industry safety teams to develop incentives for operators and pilots to freely share weather reports.

The National Transportation Safety Board has issued Safety Recommendation A-17-025, identified by reference number DCA15SR001, directed to the Federal Aviation Administration. This recommendation calls on the agency to encourage industry safety efforts, specifically citing initiatives such as the Commercial Aviation Safety Team and the General Aviation Joint Steering Committee. The Board urges these groups to identify, develop, and implement incentives for 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 121, 135, and 91K operators, as well as the general aviation community. The goal is to promote the free sharing of pilot weather reports, known as PIREPs, with the National Airspace System. These reports include braking action or runway condition information filed as PIREPs. The Board states that enhancing the availability of this data is essential to improving flight safety across the aviation sector.
