The National Transportation Safety Board urges the Federal Aviation Administration to collaborate with manufacturers and developers to create cockpit systems that alert pilots when an aircraft is not aligned with the intended runway.

The National Transportation Safety Board has issued recommendation A-18-026, identified as DCA17IA148, addressed directly to the Federal Aviation Administration. This directive calls for immediate collaboration between the FAA and a broad coalition of stakeholders, including aircraft manufacturers, avionics manufacturers, and software developers. The primary objective is to develop advanced technology capable of providing pilots with a clear alert when an airplane is not properly aligned with the intended runway surface during approach or landing phases. Once such technology becomes available and viable for implementation, the recommendation further instructs the FAA to establish a mandatory requirement for this safety system to be installed on airplanes operating at primary airports located within Class B and Class C airspace. This measure aims to enhance situational awareness and prevent runway incursions or overruns by ensuring pilots are immediately notified of alignment discrepancies.
