NTSB Issues Safety Recommendation Regarding Boeing 757 and 767 Landing Procedures
The National Transportation Safety Board urges the Federal Aviation Administration to update operating manuals to clarify derotation techniques and control column usage.
The National Transportation Safety Board has issued safety recommendation A-94-118, directed at the Federal Aviation Administration. The board recommends that all FAA-approved Boeing 757 and 767 operating manuals, along with other airplane model operating manuals deemed appropriate, must clearly communicate derotation techniques. Specifically, these documents need to address the potential for excessive pitch rates after touchdown if pilots utilize large nose-down control column deflections. This critical information should be inserted into the sections of the manual that refer to normal and crosswind approach and landing, presented as a cautionary note. Additionally, the board advises replacing instructions that call for positive forward control pressure after nose wheel touchdown. Instead, the recommendation is to include a warning to smoothly fly the nose wheel to the runway by relaxing aft control column pressure and avoiding the use of full down elevator.
