Aviation Safety Recommendation Issued for Robinson R22 Helicopter Design Analysis

A recent aviation safety recommendation has been issued to the Federal Aviation Administration regarding the Robinson R22 helicopter. The directive instructs the agency to work in conjunction with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Robinson Helicopter Company. The primary objective is to conduct wind tunnel and modeling tests. These tests aim to examine flight parameters of the R22 helicopter. The goal is to determine the design characteristics related to main rotor divergent behavior. If any abnormal rotor system performance characteristics are identified, necessary actions must be taken. These actions include assuring proper dissemination of the information and modifying the R22 design. This recommendation carries an urgent classification. It has been superseded by recommendations A-96-9 through -13.
