PLT OF SMA ACCEPTED FLT PLAN TO GREENWOOD WHEN HE WANTED TO FLY AND LAND AT METRO; IN. APCH CTLR GAVE VECTOR AND CLRNC TO GREENWOOD. 2 MISSED APCHS. PLT USING VOR FOR METRO; FINALLY CONVEYED TO CTLR PLT WANTED TO LAND METRO.
ON THE MORNING OF THE INCIDENT AN INST FLT PLAN WAS FILED REQUESTING A FLT ORIGINATING IN EVANSVILLE AND ENDING AT 4I8. BEFORE DEP A CLRNC WAS REQUESTED AND RECEIVED. HOWEVER; THE FLT WAS CLRED 'AS FILED' TO 5I1. I ACCEPTED THE CLRNC ERRONEOUSLY BELIEVING THAT 4I8 WAS GEOGRAPHICALLY LOCATED IN GREENWOOD; IN. FLT PROCEEDED UNEVENTFUL UNTIL NEARING THE SHELBYVILLE VOR. ATC ADVISED ME TO EXPECT AN NDB APCH TO 5I1. HOWEVER; NAV AIDS WERE SET FOR NDB APCH TO 4I8. ATC ASSIGNED A HDG AND EXTENDED APCH CLRNC. HOWEVER; FLYING ON THE ASSIGNED HDG DID NOT PERMIT ME TO REACH THE 4I8 NCB. THE APCH WAS MISSED AND THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY 2 ADDITIONAL MISSED APCHES. IN DISCUSSION WITH ATC CTRL AND PLT DISCOVERED THAT THE ARPT OF INTENDED DEST WAS 4I8 RATHER THAN 5I1. CONSEQUENTLY; I WAS VECTORED TO THE INITIAL APCH FIX FOR THE VOR RWY 32 APCH TO METRO. FINAL APCH CLRNC WAS RECEIVED. HOWEVER; THE ACFT DSNDED BELOW THE PUBLISHED ALT OF 2400 FT BEFORE REACHING THE APPIE INTXN. ATC ALERTED ME AND I RETURNED TO THE PUBLISHED ELEVATION AND COMPLETED THE APCH WITHOUT DIFFICULTY. THE IFR FLT PLAN WAS CANCELLED SHORTLY BEFORE LNDG.
