GA SMA ON A NIGHT TRAINING FLT CAUSES A COMMUTER SMT TO GAR FROM STRAIGHT IN APCH TO OPPOSITE DIRECTION RWY.

Narrative

I WAS DOING MY FIRST TRAINING FLT AT NIGHT AT THE SONOMA COUNTY ARPT WITH MY INSTRUCTOR. WE WERE PERFORMING TOUCH AND GOES ON RWY 14; ALL THE WHILE ANNOUNCING ALL TURNS. UPON MY SECOND TKOF I NOTICED PLANES IN THE DISTANCE (TO THE S) THAT WERE PROBABLY INBOUND FOR LNDG. AFTER ANNOUNCING L XWIND AND L DOWNWIND AND COMING ABEAM THE TWR A PLT ANNOUNCED AN 11 MI FINAL FOR RWY 32. I THEN AGAIN ANNOUNCED L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 14. I GOT NO RESPONSE. AFTER ANNOUNCING L BASE THE OTHER PLT ANNOUNCED A 6 MI FINAL. VERY SOON THEREAFTER I ANNOUNCED A SHORT FINAL RWY 14 TOUCH AND GO AND THAT I HAD TFC IN SIGHT AND FELT I COULD AVOID. AFTER TKOF I NOTICED THE PLANE BREAKING OFF FOR RWY 14 SO I WAS THEN TOLD TO KEEP A STANDARD L PATTERN. AT THIS POINT THE OTHER PLT ASKED WHY I DIDN'T ANNOUNCE MY INTENTIONS. I THEN RESPONDED THAT I HAD DONE SO 3 TIMES. HE ASKED AGAIN. AT THAT POINT I REALIZED WE HADN'T BEEN TRANSMITTING. WE THEN SWITCHED TO THE HAND- HELD. MY INSTRUCTOR ANNOUNCED WHAT WE HAD BEEN DOING AND THERE WAS NO FURTHER CONVERSATION. I THEN DEPARTED THE PATTERN AT L DOWNWIND TO GIVE HIM AND THE OTHER COMMUTER TIME TO LAND. I FEEL WE MADE EVERY EFFORT TO AVOID ANY TYPE OF INCIDENT AND IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT MY INTERCOM WASN'T WORKING PROPERLY.
