Synopsis

ACR MLG OVER GROSS WT TKOF FROM MDW.

Narrative

AFTER APPROX 2 HRS OF GND TIME IN MDW WE JUMPED INTO AN MLG TO COMPLETE OUR SEQUENCE OF FLTS. WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 22L. OUR WT WAS 104400 POUNDS. THE MAX FOR THIS RWY WAS 107100 (FLAPS 15; BLEEDS OFF). WAITING OUR TURN FOR DEP; I NOTICED THE CLOSED PORTION OF THE RWY (APPROX 535 FT) PRIOR TO THRESHOLD OF 22L. FEELING VERY DISJOINTED AFTER THE GND TIME INTERRUPTION; I 'WAG'ED' THE ALMOST 3000 POUNDS AND WE WERE SIMULTANEOUSLY CLRED FOR TKOF. OFF WE WENT -- DOWN THE RWY -- HALFWAY DOWN ROTATING ON SPD AND PITCHING UP TO 20 DEG AND ACCELERATING; PASSING OVER THE DEP END AT APPROX 300-400 FT. AT ALT (35000 FT) I PULLED OUT A CALCULATOR AND PUNCHED SOME NUMBERS IN. WE WERE 2500 POUNDS OVER GROSS! PERCEPTIONS; JUDGEMENTS; DECISIONS: GND TIME IS NO DIFFERENT THAN A COCKPIT INTERRUPTION OF TRIVIAL NATURE. I HAVE NO EXCUSE FOR 'LET'S GET ON WITH THE SHOW-ITIS'. OUR OPS MANUAL STIPULATES PRIORITY FOR ALL OPS; SAFETY; PAX COMFORT; SCHEDULE. SEVERE CLR; DRY RWY WITH THE WINDS RIGHT DOWN THE CENTER. ENGS FUNCTIONING NORMAL. ALL OK. WELL; WHAT ABOUT SOME ABNORMALS? THE BUCK STOPS HERE! SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 188957: AFTER TKOF HE NOTICED ON HIS RELEASE (HE HAD MISSED IT BEFORE) THAT RWY 22 WAS SHORTENED BY 500 FT.
