FLC OF LGT HAD FIRE WARNING #3 ENG APCHING BOS. #3 ENG SHUTDOWN; NORMAL LNDG.
I WAS CAPT ON THE FLT FROM LGA-BOS. SO AND I HAD FLOWN ACFT ON PREVIOUS NIGHT AND HAD NUMEROUS FIRE WARNINGS ON #3 ENG WHILE AT THE GATE WITH ENGS SHUTDOWN. FIRE WARNING WAS REPAIRED OVERNIGHT. DURING FLT AT FL210; #3 FIRE WARNING CAME ON. FO SILENCED BELL; AND WARNING WENT OUT BEFORE ANY OTHER ACTION WAS TAKEN. ON APCH AT 5000 FT WHILE SLOWING TO 210 KTS; #3 FIRE WARNING CAME ON AGAIN AND STAYED ON. I TOLD FO THAT I WOULD FLY THE ACFT AND HE AND SO SHOULD FIGHT FIRE AND SHUTDOWN THE ENG. MY REASONING WAS GIVEN CLOSE PROX TO ARPT AND 2 ENG LNDG; I SHOULD CONTINUE TO FLY THE ACFT. FO SILENCED THE BELL; BUT BELL WENT OFF SEVERAL MORE TIMES DURING SHUTDOWN. FO BROUGHT THROTTLE TO IDLE; START LEVER TO CUT OFF; THEN BELL SOUNDED AGAIN. I SAW HIM PUSH BOTTLE DISCHARGE SWITCH AND SAID WE MUST PULL THE FIRE SHUTDOWN HANDLE. FO THEN PULLED THE HANDLE AND DISCHARGED THE AGENT. FIRE WARNING WENT OUT. CHKLISTS WERE COMPLETED. APCH AND LNDG WERE NORMAL. I SHOULD HAVE ENSURED ENG SHUTDOWN WAS DONE PROPERLY BY TELLING MY CREW TO PERFORM EACH STEP SLOWLY AND TO XCHK WITH EACH OTHER AT EACH STEP. THE FIRE BELL ALSO CONTRIBUTED GREATLY TO COM PROBLEM DURING THE SHUTDOWN. ALSO SHOULD HAVE BRIEFED FOR FIRE WARNING AND SHUTDOWN AFTER IT WENT OFF AT FL210.
