2022-07 · NASA ASRS report 1920602
Pilot reported the nose landing gear collapsed on landing; resulting in a propeller strike and sudden engine stoppage. The aircraft was moved by hand to a hangar for inspection and repairs.
On Day I was returning from a local flight to my home airport. Sky conditions were clear and winds calm. Landing approach was a normal landing to Runway XX using a standard left pattern. Pre landing checklist was performed landing gear down indication was verified 3 times; on lowering gear; prior to descending below TPA of 1;200 feet and again on final with no abnormalities noted. Approach was normal full flaps at 75 mph and short final over threshold was 65 mph. This was slower than my target speed of 70mph but but Vso in this configuration is 58 mph. There was no indications of stall at any time. Landing was on center line with main gear touching down first. As soon as nose gear touched the runway the nose dropped and the gear warning horn sounded. (This horn sounds if throttle is at idle and any landing gear is not in the full down and locked position). Prop strike with runway resulted in sudden stop of engine. Time was XA:09. I shutdown main and master switches and notified any traffic that runway at ZZZ was unavailable via portable radio. Assistance arrived by local persons at the airport. I completed shutdown checklist after talking with others who asked about any injuries. There were no injuries; no fire or fuel leakage; and no damage to runway or airport equipment. Aircraft was moved by hand to hangar and I contacted the FAA to inform them what occurred by phone at XB:45. Since it was Day I left a message. I also contacted the emergency Airport contact to inform them what happened at XC:37. An initial and cursory inspection by an IA at the airport pointed out a weld on the horizontal portion of the nose gear where it attached to the airframe had failed.
