SMA PLT IN A NIGHT OP LOSES PRIMARY SOURCE OF ELECTRICAL PWR AND GETS FLT ASSIST FROM ARTCC RADAR CTLR TO NEAREST ARPT.

Narrative

OCT/THU/91 FILED IFR OUT OF NASHVILLE; TN; (BNA) TO CHARLESTON; WV; (CRW) ON THE FIRST LEG OF A FLT BACK TO PENN YAN; NY; (N22). TKOF TIME WAS PM45 CST. I WAS CLRED TO HAZARD VOR (AZQ). PRIOR TO HAZARD; ZID RPTED THAT THEY WERE NOT PICKING UP MY TRANSPONDER AND TO RPT HAZARD. I RPTED AZQ AND 7000 FT. CENTER DID PICK ME UP FOR A SHORT TIME; THEN RPTED THEY LOST RADAR CONTACT AGAIN. I CHKED MY AMMETER AND IT INDICATED CHARGING. I CHKED THE CIRCUIT BREAKERS AND THEY WERE OK. I WAS HAVING DIFFICULTY RECEIVING CENTER AND REQUESTED A FREQ CHANGE WHICH I WAS GIVEN. MY DME WENT BLANK AND I WAS GETTING A LOUD HUM FROM THE STROBE LIGHTS WHICH I THEN SHUT DOWN. I RPTED TO ZID THAT I WAS EXPERIENCING AN ELECTRICAL FAILURE AND REQUEST TO LAND AT THE NEAREST ARPT. CENTER HAD ME CHK A NUMBER OF THINGS WHICH CONFIRMED FAILURE. CENTER CLRED ME TO CRW AND GAVE ME VECTORS. TOLD ME TO EXPECT VISUAL TO RWY 23. I WAS LOSING RECEPTION AND THEY TURNED ME OVER TO CRW APCH. I SHUT DOWN ALL ELECTRICAL WHICH WAS NOT NEEDED. I WAS CLRING TO R BASE RWY 23. I RPTED THE ARPT IN SIGHT AND TURNED OVER TO TWR. CRW TWR ASKED IF I WANTED RWY 15 WHICH I WAS ALREADY ON A R BASE FOR. I ACCEPTED AND LANDED ON RWY 15.
