GA SMA DEPARTED NON TWR ARPT WITH A FILED FLT PLAN BUT NO CLRNC AND ENTERED THE CLT TCA AND IMC BEFORE CLRNC WAS RECEIVED.

Narrative

HAD FLOWN FROM MONROE; NC; (EQY) TO GASTONIA; NC; (0A6) VIA IFR FLT PLAN. USED ASR APCH INTO 0A6. NOTED CEILING TO BE APPROX 1800 MSL. ARRIVED 0A6 AT XX30 AM LCL. GOT WX BRIEFING AND FILED FLT PLAN FOR RETURN TO EQY. EXCEPT FOR A SMALL OPENING TO THE W; THE 0A6 ARPT IS SURROUNDED BY THE CLT TCA. GND RADIO CONTACT WITH CLT ATC IS NOT POSSIBLE FROM 0A6. MY PLAN WAS TO DEPART TO THE W (TO AVOID TCA) AND MAINTAIN VFR UNTIL OBTAINING MY CLRNC. UPON DEP AND DESPITE MY BEST EFFORTS I ENTERED IMC WHILE AT LOW ALT (LESS THAN 1500 MSL); AND WITHOUT A CLRNC. RATHER THAN RISK A DSCNT; I IMMEDIATELY BEGAN A BEST ANGLE CLB. SHORTLY THEREAFTER; I RECEIVED MY CLRNC BUT WAS WARNED OF TWRS AT 12 O'CLOCK AT 2 MI. THEN WHILE IN IMC AND AT BEST ANGLE CLB; I EXECUTED A 45 DEG BANK TURN TO ON COURSE HDG (130 DEGS). THE REST OF THE FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL. I BELIEVE THE MAJOR CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TO BE THE LAYOUT OF THE CLT TCA. I THINK I COULD HAVE DEPARTED 0A6 TO THE E OR CIRCLED 0A6 FROM A SAFE DISTANCE AND EASILY MAINTAINED VFR.
