Flight Instructor with student reported a gust of wind combine with the student's control inputs caused the aircraft to depart the taxiway surface. After inspecting the aircraft and pushing it back on the taxiway; the flight crew continued with their planned flight.
I was the instructor in a runway excursion on my student's instrument long cross country flight. The winds were 280@18G25 as we were taxiing to the departure runway with a left quartering tailwind. My student had his crosswind correction correctly positioned for a quartering left tailwind. While taxiing at a speed of around 10 knots; a gust of wind caused the aircraft to veer left of centerline and upon reaction from the student; the plane began to skid towards the left as well until it went off the taxiway to a stop. Upon stopping I notified ATC of the situation and shut down. While looking over the aircraft it seemed there had been no damage to any part of the aircraft except for a slightly worn tire due to the skidding on the pavement. We pushed the plane back into position on the taxiway and decided it was safe to continue the flight back. After looking back at the situation I believe it could have been prevented by taxiing at a slower speed in such gusty conditions and further training on directional control as an event like that could happen; such as we practice for multi-engine training on aborted takeoffs.
