Synopsis

FLC OF LGT IN CLB QUESTIONED BY ARTCC REF RADIAL OFF MIA. ARTCC SCOPE SHOWED 2 DEG ERROR.

Narrative

FLL DEP CTL GAVE US A HDG OF 270 TO INTERCEPT J85 OUT OF MIA AND TO CLB TO FL230. WE WERE APPROX 27-30 MI N OF MIA VOR AT THAT TIME AND WERE TOLD TO CONTACT MIA CENTER. MIA ASKED US IF WE HAD BEEN ISSUED A CLRNC TO INTERCEPT J85 AND I SAID THAT WE HAD BEEN BUT HAD NOT YET REACHED THE AIRWAY AT THAT TIME. WE WERE APPROX 1 DOT (5 DEGS) ON THE HSI FOR OUR INTERCEPT. THE CTLR SAID HE SHOWED US ON THE AIRWAY AND TOLD US TO TURN TO A 340 DEG HDG AND MAINTAIN 16000 AND THAT HE HAD TFC AT 17000. WE WERE CLBING THROUGH 14000 AND I READ BACK THE CLRNC ACKNOWLEDGING THE 340 HDG AND THE 16000 ALT. THE CENTER SAID THEY HAD SOME TROUBLE WITH THE MIA VOR EARLIER. WE WERE THEN CLRED DIRECT TO LAKELAND VOR AND TO CLB TO FL230. WHEN WE WERE APPROX 56 MI FROM MIA VOR THE CENTER ASKED US WHAT RADIAL WE SHOWED OFF THE MIA VOR. I SAID 333 AND THE CENTER SHOWED US 331. THERE WAS NO FURTHER DISCUSSION. I FEEL THAT THE 65 DEG INTERCEPT CAUSED THE CTLR TO FEEL LIKE WE WERE NOT GOING TO MAKE THE TURN ONTO THE AIRWAY. A MORE GRADUAL INTERCEPT MAY HAVE AVOIDED THE PROBLEM. ALSO; SINCE THE CENTER RPTED TO US THAT THEY HAD 'SOME TROUBLE WITH THE VOR' WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADVISED THAT IT MIGHT GIVE AN ERRONEOUS READING AND PLAN THE INTERCEPT ACCORDINGLY.
