Synopsis

Gulfstream IV flight crew reported being notified by flight attendant of smoke in the galley during initial climb. ATC provided special handling to return to departure airport where a safe landing was executed.

Narrative

We were departing ZZZ climbing on the ZZZZZ departure heading 320. When we were climbing trough approximately 3000 feet MSL when the flight attendant reported she smelled smoke in the galley. Both of us the pilots could smell it and see it as well. The flight attendant went back to the galley quickly to investigate and she reported a circuit breaker popped. Meanwhile we had requested with ATC to return to ZZZ. They were vectoring us back and we picked up the visual for Runway XX. While we were being vectored ATC gave us priority handling. When we taxied back to the ramp we were met by emergency services. Together with the fire fighters we determined that the source was electrical coming from the galley but that there was no fire burning on the airplane. When we got back to the ramp we immediately shut down all the electric power to the galley. In hind sight we could have done that earlier; immediately when we smelled the smoke. But we always learned and we believe that as soon as you detect a fire on an airplane you should land. We were sticking to our Aviate; Navigate; Communicate. We were close to ZZZ and being vectored for the visual approach. So our flight time was short and we were not seeing major smoke or any fire.

Second reporter narrative

We departed from ZZZ Runway XX on the ZZZZZ departure; we changed with Departure frequency we were cleared to 10000 feet during climb though approximately 3000 feet the Flight Attendant came to us to report that there is smoke in galley and smelled too. The Captain and I smelled it and we could see it as well. The Flight Attendant went back to the galley quickly to investigate and she reported a circuit breaker popped. Meanwhile we requested with ATC to return to ZZZ. ATC was vectoring us back and we decided visual to Runway XX. While we were vectoring ATC [gave priority] for us. When we were on ground taxi to the ramp; emergency services and fire fighters were waiting for us. We supposed that the issue was electrical coming from galley but there was no fire on the plane. As soon as we got back to the ramp the captain immediately shut down all the electrical power from the galley and cabin. We always learned and believe that as soon as you detect smoke or fire on the plane you have to land as soon as possible. We did as we were trained aviate; navigate and communicate. No body was hurt and we land our airplane safely. I think we did good CRM.
