PLT OF SMA FLEW OVER FIELD ANNOUNCING ON CTAF THAT HE WOULD MAKE A R PATTERN FOR LNDG 17. SHORT FINAL SAW SMA LIFTING OFF 35. THEY DODGED EACH OTHER.

Narrative

WHILE ON A VFR FLT FROM SNL TO HSD; I HAD TO TRAVEL FROM SE TO NW ACROSS THE OKLAHOMA CITY ARSA. I WAS IN RADIO AND RADAR CONTACT WITH OKC APCH CTL. SUNDANCE AIRPARK IS APPROX 5 MI OUT OF THE ARSA OUTER CIRCLE. I WAS CLRED TO CHANGE FREQS BY OKC APCH APPROX 4.5 MI SE OF SUNDANCE. ON THIS PARTICULAR DAY THERE WAS VERY LIGHT TO NO WIND. HAVING BEEN ON THE CTAF FREQ FOR SUNDANCE BEFORE TALKING WITH OKC APCH; I LEARNED THAT MOST EVERYONE FLYING THAT DAY WAS USING RWY 17. I CALLED ON THE CTAF WHEN 4.5 MI FROM SUNDANCE AND DECLARED THAT I WOULD OVERFLY THE FIELD AT 2500 FT AND ENTER A R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 17. I CALLED OVER THE FIELD; DOWNWIND; BASE AND FINAL LEGS. THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FROM ANY TFC IN THE SUNDANCE PATTERN. ON SHORT FINAL I NOTICED A PLANE DEPARTING RWY 35. HE SAW ME BEFORE I SAW HIM AND HE HAD ALREADY SIDE-STEPPED TO HIS R TO AVOID A COLLISION. THE OTHER PLT HAD ALREADY TAKEN EVASIVE ACTION; SO I CONTINUED ON TO A NORMAL LNDG. I ESTIMATE THAT WE PASSED WITHIN 200-250 FT HORIZLY. WHILE ON THE SUNDANCE CTAF FREQ NEITHER I NOR MY PAX HEARD ANY OTHER TFC IN THE PATTERN; NOR DID WE HEAR ANYONE DECLARE THEIR INTENTIONS TO DEPART ON RWY 35. AS THE PIC; I DID FAIL TO VISUALLY CHK THE DEP END OF THE RWY I INTENDED TO LAND ON. I RELIED TOO MUCH ON OTHER PLTS TO USE CORRECT RADIO PROCS AND NOT ENOUGH ON MY OWN VISUAL CHK OF THE AREA TO ENSURE SEPARATION.
