C182 pilot reported aircraft failed to climb after takeoff. The pilot immediately performed an air turn back and landed at departure airport.
I completed run up; waited for departing traffic that had been cleared for departure on Runway XX; called tower to say I was holding short Runway XX; ready for departure. I was then cleared for takeoff; Runway XX. I rolled onto runway; gave full power and started ground roll; not noticing any issues. I rotated; and started to climb but quickly noticed I was not gaining altitude. I monitored my instruments and oil pressure; oil temperature; and rpm was all in green and full power at 2;600 RPM; while continuing to try to climb and diagnose the issue.I was then instructed by tower to start my left turn and fly left downwind Runway XX.At that same moment I noticed I was losing airspeed; so I dipped the nose down to gain speed; and while I was in the turn requested priority handling. I continued to make left turn for Runway XY to put airplane back on the ground. I managed to land plane down runway by 1;000 foot markers; but with the tailwind; speed; and energy I went off the end of the runway into grass. I then proceeded to continue off the grass and onto the taxiway by hangers and brought plane to a complete stop. I told tower that myself; and 3 passengers were all safe and plane came to a complete stop and I told the tower I was shutting the plane down.
