B777 Captain reported two flight spoilers deployed in the unlocked position during cruise. Captain requested priority handling and diverted after accomplishing appropriate checklists.
At FL330 prior to ETOPS entry; aircraft rolled left. Both engines were operating. Aircraft then rolled in 4 units right aileron. The aircraft developed a buffet. Airspeed is good. SPOILERS EICAS annunciation. We [requested priority handling]. I was flying and had radios while the First Officer (FO) ran the checklist. We determined the #4; 11 spoilers failed in the unlocked position. I handed aircraft to FO and contacted Dispatch and Maintenance. We decided to divert to ZZZ; autopilot was disconnected and the aircraft was hand flown. Relief Pilot returned to the flight deck and figured out landing data for our malfunction. Overweight landing checklist was followed. Diversion guide was reviewed. Flight Attendants were notified and brief items were reviewed. Passengers were briefed. FO handed me the aircraft while being vectored to final. Normal flaps 30 landing ensued. Maintenance write ups included SPOILERS EICAS message; FLIGHT CONTROL SYS status message; spoilers failed; overweight landing; and RECIRC FAN status message. We were 62 miles from ZZZ when this happened. The crew did an exemplary job flying; managing tasks; advocating; and supporting me in every way. The relief pilot was fresh off IOE. Being woken up and returning to an priority in progress is challenging. They rose to the challenge and were an asset immediately accomplishing necessary tasks quickly and efficiently. The old timer of my crew with XX years on the 777; performed to the highest standard. They were instrumental in analyzing the situation; managing checklists; and then managing our descent into ZZZ while hand flying. Our purser was flying their first trip as a purser. Bless their heart; they could not believe this was happening but when I said Brief; they immediately knew what that meant and jumped into action professionally and effectively managing the crew and cabin. Overall I am very proud of this crew and honored to have had the privilege to work with them.
