Synopsis

PA-28 solo student pilot reported that upon landing; the nose gear began bouncing and the aircraft porpoised several times. The aircraft departed the runway and the nose gear broke off.

Narrative

Had a student pilot solo flight scheduled out of ZZZ Airport; winds were 6 kts on departure; but began to pick up. I had landed about 8 times prior to the incident while doing pattern work; and I was within the limits of my skill level and endorsements. Came in for a short field landing; airspeed; altitude; and sight picture all looked good. Main gear touched down at around 68 mph; nose gear came down slowly then suddenly started bouncing up and down immediately after making contact with the ground. This caused the airplane to bounce once onto the main landing gear; and then three times onto the nose gear first. On the third bounce; a gust hit the aircraft from the left causing it to veer to the right. After this; the plane hit the edge of the grass next to the runway nose first; which caused the nose gear to break off and the airplane to come to a stop. While I have been trained how to correct for this situation in principle; it all happened very fast. After a lengthy discussion with my school and instructor; we have agreed to remedial training and another solo checkout before I am authorized to fly solo again.

Frequently asked questions

How do I search flights by aircraft type on FlightFinder?

Pick an aircraft model — Boeing 737, Airbus A320, A380, Boeing 787 Dreamliner and more — enter your origin airport, and FlightFinder shows every route that plane flies from there with live fares.

Which aircraft types can I filter by?

We support Boeing 737/747/757/767/777/787, the full Airbus A220/A319/A320/A321/A330/A340/A350/A380 family, Embraer E170/E175/E190/E195, Bombardier CRJ and Dash 8, and the ATR 42/72 turboprops.

Is FlightFinder free to use?

Search and schedules are free. Pro ($4.99/month, $39/year, or $99 one-time lifetime) unlocks the enriched flight card — on-time stats, CO₂ per passenger, amenities, live gate & weather — plus My Trips with push alerts.

Where does the route data come from?

Live schedules come from Amadeus, AeroDataBox and Travelpayouts. Observed routes (which aircraft actually flew a given city pair) are crowdsourced from adsb.lol ADS-B data under the Open Database License.
