Synopsis

ACR WDB LANDS OVERWT IN A RETURN LAND SITUATION AFTER AN ENG INFLT FIRE AND INFLT ENG SHUTDOWN.

Narrative

WE DEPARTED MSP APR/THU/92 NONSTOP TO HNL. TKOF WT AROUND 519000 POUNDS; NORMAL DEP. AT 17000 FT #1 ENG LOOP B LIGHT ILLUMINATED. I INFORMED THE CAPT AND COMPLETED OUR PROC FROM OUR COCKPIT OP MANUAL. (NORMAL TEST ON A LOOP SO WE CONTINUED IN A). AT FL290 #1 ENG GAVE FULL FIRE WARNING. CAPT SILENCED THE BELL AND DIRECTED FO TO FLY THE ACFT. WE PERFORMED EMER CHKLIST AND RETURNED TO MSP. CAPT INSTRUCTED ME TO DUMP FUEL TO ATTAIN MAX LNDG WT. SYS DUMPED FUEL TO SHUTOFFS OF 11500 POUNDS (ACTUALLY AROUND 14000 POUNDS/TANKS 1 AND 3; AROUND 50000 #2 TANK; AND 3000 POUNDS IN AUX TANK. ALL XFEEDS AUTOMATICALLY CLOSED. I COMPLETED CHKLISTS AND SECURED FUEL DUMP AT WHICH TIME WE WERE ON ABOUT A 7 MI FINAL TO MSP. ACFT WAS LANDED AT 416000 POUNDS; 5000 POUNDS OVER MAX LNDG WT. EMER EQUIP STANDING BY AND NORMAL LNDG. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE CAUGHT THE DUMP PROCESS BEFORE IT SHUTOFF AT THE 11500 SHUTOFF BY CLOSING XFEEDS FOR TANKS 1 AND 3. I FEEL I COULD HAVE GOT US DOWN TO 411000 OR LESS. HOWEVER; I WAS VERY BUSY WITH CHKLISTS AND SUCH. ALSO; I DO NOT FEEL THE EXTRA 5000 POUNDS OF FUEL WT MADE THE OP LESS SAFE AS THE WX WAS GOOD; PLENTY OF RWY; ETC. I FEEL ALL CREW MEMBERS FOLLOWED PROCS AND THE RESULT WAS A SAFE RETURN TO MSP.
