A320 pilot reported a bang and faint smell during descent followed by an engine stall ECAM. Crew followed ECAM procedures; shut down the engine and landed single engine.
FO flying. Descending through 8000 ft on ZZZZZ2 arrival into ZZZ. Experienced a very slight bang and very faint smell in cockpit which dissipated quickly. ECAM indicated Engine #1 Stall for 2 seconds then ECAM went back to Normal and could not be recalled. Engine gauges were also normal at idle. Flight Attendant called saying they experienced the same things. Captain let them know we were working on it and would get back to them. Captain did Procedures while FO flying to follow.Leveling off at 6000 ft #1 engine started to increase thrust as temperature increased with ECAM indicating Engine #1 EGT Over limit with directions to shut down - Engine #1. It took but 4 seconds to complete with no further smells or sounds. Engine #1 indications back to below normal and OFF.Completed ECAM- Followed by appropriate QRHs. [Requested priority assistance] - Contacted Flight Attendants code XXXXXX. Expect remain seated." Contacted ZZZ operations- Lastly; Captain spoke to passengers and let them know "What happened followed with expect a normal landing and please follow cabin crew instructions." Captain did normal landing on Runway XX. Stopped aircraft on runway. "Cabin crew remain seated". Captain spoke to Crash Fire Rescue to look at #1 engine briefly to look for any abnormalities. Taxied to gate. MEL was applied to Maintenance Logbook."
