Synopsis

B737-800 flight crew reported main landing gear would not stay retracted when landing gear handle was moved to the off position. Flight crew returned to departure airport and landed.

Narrative

We took off from ZZZ airport runway XXR at XA:30 on the ZZZZZ departure. I was Pilot flying and flew the airplane manually until we realized we had a landing gear disagree. After retracting flaps and calling for AFTER TAKEOFF checklist and the captain performing the AFTER TAKEOFF FLOW and bringing the gear lever to OFF I felt the airplane was difficult to trim; shortly after this; we realized that the landing gear position indicator on the main center panel was showing 2 red lights and 2 green lights. There was no indication for the nose gear. We confirmed the actual landing gear position by verifying with the landing gear position indicator on the forward overhead panel; which was displaying 2 green lights for the main gears. We executed QRH procedure for Gear disagree and brought the gear lever to UP as directed by QRH; this retracted all gear. After discussing with dispatch and Maintenance Control we decided to request a hold to burn fuel and be below max landing weight. We returned to ZZZ airport after aproximarely 45 minutes of holding. For the arrival we agreed to configure early; mainly to extend the gear early. We landed at ZZZ airport without further issues.Cause: Potentially a landing gear factor.

Second reporter narrative

After takeoff from RWY XXR at ZZZ Airport; gear handle selected up and all gear retracted normally. After takeoff checklist performed. Flaps were retracted; and when aircraft was clean; gear handle selected to OFF. Both main gear dropped at this time but nose gear remained retracted. Main panel showed two red/two green lights for main gear and forward overhead indicated two green for main gear. Performed Gear Disagree QRH procedure and both main gear retracted when gear handle selected up. Communicated with dispatch and Maintenance Control and elected to return to ZZZ Airport. Held at ZZZZZ to burn fuel to arrive below max landing weight. On gear extension; all gear extended normally and a normal landing was made at ZZZ airport. No emergency declared.Cause: Aircraft malfunction and/or maintenance issue.Suggestions: Maintenance awareness

How do I search flights by aircraft type on FlightFinder?

Pick an aircraft model — Boeing 737, Airbus A320, A380, Boeing 787 Dreamliner and more — enter your origin airport, and FlightFinder shows every route that plane flies from there with live fares.

Which aircraft types can I filter by?

We support Boeing 737/747/757/767/777/787, the full Airbus A220/A319/A320/A321/A330/A340/A350/A380 family, Embraer E170/E175/E190/E195, Bombardier CRJ and Dash 8, and the ATR 42/72 turboprops.

Is FlightFinder free to use?

Search and schedules are free. Pro ($4.99/month, $39/year, or $99 one-time lifetime) unlocks the enriched flight card — on-time stats, CO₂ per passenger, amenities, live gate & weather — plus My Trips with push alerts.

Where does the route data come from?

Live schedules come from Amadeus, AeroDataBox and Travelpayouts. Observed routes (which aircraft actually flew a given city pair) are crowdsourced from adsb.lol ADS-B data under the Open Database License.
