PLT OF SMT ACFT EXPERIENCED RADIO COM FAILURE AND HYD SYS MALFUNCTION RESULTING IN DECLARING AN EMER LNDG.

Narrative

ON JUN/TUES/92; AT APPROX XX30 PM; I WAS FLYING OUR ACFT ENRTE FROM HILTON HEAD; SC; TO GREENSBORO; NC; VFR. I ATTEMPTED TO GET VFR ADVISORIES FROM ZJX; AT APPROX 10000 FT; WHEN ATC ADVISED ME THAT MY RADIO COMS WERE UNREADABLE. AFTER 6 ATTEMPTS AT SWITCHING RADIO CTLS AND HEADPHONES TO HANDHELD XMITTER; CTR ASKED ME TO TRY FLORENCE APCH. AFTER 6 MORE ATTEMPTS AT DIFFERENT RADIOS AND SWITCHES; I WAS AGAIN ADVISED THAT MY COMS WERE COMPLETELY UNREADABLE. I DECLARED AN EMER LNDG DUE TO LOST RADIO COM; A YELLOW ANNUNCIATOR LIGHT COMING ON TO INDICATE LOW HYD OIL; AND THE FACT THAT I WAS A SINGLE PLT WITH NO ASSISTANCE SHOULD I HAVE FURTHER PROBLEMS. APPROX 100 MI S OF GREENSBORO; I RECEIVED THE ATIS AND RECONFIRMED THE WX WAS STILL VFR AT GREENSBORO AND CHOSE TO LAND AT GREENSBORO FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: 1) IT WAS THE ARPT I USE OFTEN AND WAS MOST FAMILIAR AND COMFORTABLE LNDG AT; 2) I WANTED TO LAND WITH A POSITIVE CTLED ARPT FOR MY SAFETY AND OTHERS; 3) I KNEW GREENSBORO WAS AN ARSA WHICH MEANT THAT IF I XMITTED 7700 EMER CODE I WOULD BE IDENTED AND THEY WOULD CLR ME TO LAND; WHICH THEY DID. 4) DURING THE PAST 4 YRS I HAVE HAD ALL OF MY MAINT PERFORMED AT THE GREENSBORO ARPT AND THEY WOULD BE BEST SET UP TO REMEDY MY PROBLEMS. 5) MY FUEL SUPPLY WAS ADEQUATE FOR LNDG IN THE GREENSBORO AREA (I HAD FLOWN 3 HRS 15 MINS GIVING ME A 45 MIN RESERVE FOR LNDG).
